How to Make Kefir

Kefir Recipe

Homemade Kefir

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 tablespoons kefir grains

  • 2 cups whole milk (raw or pasteurized, depending on preference)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Jar: Sterilize a glass jar to ensure it's clean and free from any contaminants.

  2. Add Kefir Grains: Place the kefir grains in the jar.

  3. Pour Milk: Add the milk to the jar, leaving some space at the top. Stir gently with a wooden or plastic spoon (avoid metal as it can react with the kefir grains).

  4. Cover: Cover the jar with a clean cloth or paper towel and secure it with a rubber band. This allows the kefir to breathe while keeping out contaminants.

  5. Ferment: Let the jar sit at room temperature for 24-48 hours, depending on how tangy you like your kefir. The longer it ferments, the tangier it will become.

  6. Strain: After fermentation, strain the kefir to separate the grains from the liquid. Use a plastic or stainless steel strainer.

  7. Store: Transfer the kefir to a clean glass bottle and refrigerate. It can be consumed immediately or stored for up to a week.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Smoothies: Blend kefir with fruits and a drizzle of honey for a nutritious smoothie.

  • Salad Dressing: Mix kefir with herbs and spices for a creamy, probiotic-rich dressing.

  • Baking: Substitute kefir for buttermilk in your favorite recipes for a tangy twist.
